The suspect, who was naked and armed, was subsequently shot by police and later died from his injuries, according to officials.

On Wednesday, October 23, 2019, at approximately 1:51 a.m., eight officers from the 32nd Precinct responded to a 911 call reporting a disturbance at a residential building on Frederick Douglas Boulevard. The caller stated that a 29-year-old male was harassing a female, banging on doors, and breaking glass within the building, according to Police Commissioner James O’Neill during a press conference.

Upon entering the building, officers began searching the second floor. One officer encountered the suspect, who was naked and wielding a 9-millimeter semiautomatic handgun, according to Fox News.

During the exchange, the initial officer was shot in the chest. Fortunately, the bullet did not penetrate his body armor, preventing a potentially fatal injury.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio praised the officer’s bravery and strength, stating, “He’s shaken but he’ll be OK.”

Commissioner O’Neill noted that the officer joined the department in 2012. He is currently receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at St. Luke’s Hospital. O’Neill emphasized, “Today we are reminded that no call is ever routine.” Police have not released the suspect’s identity but indicated he had a history of domestic violence calls against him. This incident underscores the inherent dangers faced by law enforcement officers daily and the critical importance of protective equipment like body armor.

This event serves as a stark reminder of the risks police officers face every day. The importance of officer survival training and equipment is paramount in ensuring their safety and ability to protect the community.
