Stevens Point Police K9 Luna Dies of Toxic Poisoning

The Stevens Point Police Department in Wisconsin is mourning the loss of K9 Luna, who passed away last Wednesday due to suspected toxic poisoning. Luna, a two-and-a-half-year-old Belgian Malinois, suffered multiple seizures on Monday, September 2nd, and was immediately hospitalized in Appleton.

Initial reports suggest that Luna may have ingested a poisonous mushroom while on duty or during training. Despite intensive veterinary care, Luna’s condition worsened, and she succumbed to multiple organ failure last Wednesday. The department shared their grief, stating that Luna was a “most beloved member” of their team.

To honor Luna’s service and dedication, the Stevens Point Police Department raised an American flag above their headquarters on Wednesday. The flag flew for 24 hours before being lowered and displayed in recognition of her contributions to the community. This gesture served as a public tribute to her service and sacrifice.

Luna began her career with the Stevens Point Police Department in April 2018, working alongside K9 Fala. She was one of the department’s first police service dogs and was specially trained in narcotic detection, tracking, and apprehension, according to Fox 6. Luna resided with her handler, Officer J.D. Ballew, and his family, becoming an integral part of their lives.

The department emphasized Luna’s impact, stating, “In Luna’s short career, she served the community honorably and was loved by everyone she came in contact with.” Her loss is deeply felt by the department and the community she served. The dangers faced by K9 units highlight the risks these animals take to protect and serve.

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement animals and the dedication they bring to their work. The Stevens Point Police Department and the community mourn the loss of a valuable partner and friend.
