Miracle Girl Visits NYPD After Subway Suicide Survival

The New York Police Department (NYPD) recently hosted a special visitor: a young girl who miraculously survived after her father jumped in front of a moving subway train in the Bronx with her in his arms. The NYPD’s heartwarming gesture, part of their “Hope Trip” program, aimed to bring joy and create positive memories for the child after the traumatic incidents.

Five-year-old Ferni Balbuena spent a day with the NYPD, experiencing activities designed to uplift and inspire. According to the New York Post, Ferni particularly enjoyed visiting the police mounted units and boats. She was also sworn in as an honorary “officer” for the day, further solidifying the bond between the NYPD and the young survivor.

In September, Ferni made headlines when her father, who had been struggling with mental health issues, jumped in front of a subway train with her. Tragically, the father died from his injuries, but Ferni survived with virtually no physical harm. Her survival was considered a miracle.

The “Hope Trip” program, which started in March 2018, is designed to connect with children who have experienced trauma through “heroism, optimism, pride, and encouragement,” according to NYPD Spokeswoman Detective Annette Shelton, as reported by The Post.

Chief Rodney Harrison tweeted a photo of himself with Ferni, who was wearing a pint-sized NYPD uniform, complete with a shirt, tie, and police hat. The tweet read, “She found a few minutes to stop by my office before heading over to the Mounted Unit.”

Ferni’s mother, Niurka Caraballo, expressed her gratitude, saying, “Ella estaba divertido!” which translates to “She was happy!”

The day included a visit with the Chief of Patrol and the Assistant Chief of Patrol Fausto Pichardo, as well as other engaging experiences within the department. Ferni also enjoyed some pizza during her visit. The NYPD’s efforts provided a day of joy and support for a child who had experienced unimaginable grief.

This act of kindness highlights the NYPD’s commitment to the community and their dedication to supporting those who have faced adversity. The “Hope Trip” program serves as a reminder of the positive impact law enforcement can have on the lives of children during difficult times. It also underscores the importance of addressing mental illness and providing support to those in need.

Police officers often go above and beyond their call of duty to serve and protect the community. This story is a testament to their compassion and dedication to making a difference in the lives of others, especially children who have experienced trauma.
