A Miami man recounted how he defended himself, his son, and his girlfriend during a brazen robbery attempt on Monday morning. The incident occurred when an armed attacker pointed an AK-47 at his face and demanded his jewelry.
Donovan Stewart, 60, an NRA member originally from Jamaica, told CBS 4 Miami that he was sitting in his van with his 11-year-old son and girlfriend when the confrontation occurred. Stewart stated that he is trained in handling a firearm and was immediately concerned for the safety of his loved ones.
“The guy I killed last night, he put an AK-47 to my damn face,” Stewart said. “I am going to defend my life and those I love. My family is innocent and just don’t put an AK-47 in my face. I will not allow that to happen. This guy also hijacked a woman in a van and was found with her car key. He robbed another woman at gunpoint.”
Stewart continued, “You want to come looking for trouble? Come to me. Come to me. I wouldn’t do anything like this to anybody and they picked the wrong person in this case.”
Stewart described the moment he decided to act. “I am from Kingstontown in Jamaica, and I am not going to go out like a punk. So I emptied my Glock in his chest. This man tried to get in my van while I was sleeping, and he was surprised to see what I did.”
According to a CBS affiliate reporter, another individual approached him, claiming that the deceased gunman had robbed him at gunpoint the previous weekend. The incident appeared similar to the one described by Stewart. In that earlier case, the individual was reportedly robbed of $600 and a 2018 Volkswagen.
Miami Police Officer Mike Vega stated that while the incident appears to be a case of self-defense, the investigation remains open. “Everyone is cooperating, but we still need to receive more information. We need to put this all together and determine what happened,” Vega said.
The incident highlights the dangers faced by everyday citizens and the difficult decisions they sometimes have to make to protect themselves and their families. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to be released as they become available. The case also raises questions about gun violence and the right to self-defense in the face of imminent danger.
