Fayetteville Police Officer Killed in Ambush

In a tragic incident, a Fayetteville, Arkansas police officer was fatally shot near the Fayetteville Police Department on Saturday night. According to Police Chief Mike Reynolds, the officer was “executed” by a suspect who was later killed in a gun battle with responding officers.

Incident Details

Chief Reynolds stated that at approximately 9:40 p.m., shots were reported in the back parking lot of the police station. Officers inside the department responded and found a fellow officer down next to a police cruiser in an alley behind the station. An exchange of gunfire ensued between officers and the suspect in the alley. While it remains uncertain who fired the fatal shot, Reynolds confirmed the suspect’s death, as reported by KFSM.

“The officer was waiting on his partner to go to Dickson Street and work their beat,” Reynolds said. Arkansasonline.com reported that the officer was alone in the parking lot near his police cruiser when the incident occurred. The motive for the apparent execution is currently unknown.

Aftermath and Investigation

Emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the scene but were unable to save either the officer or the gunman. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. The names of those involved were not immediately released. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI have been called in to process the multiple crime scenes.

Community Impact

The Fayetteville Police Department is located near the city’s square. Witnesses attending the Lights of the Ozarks display on the square reported hearing the shots. Police spokesman Sgt. Anthony Murphy confirmed that no one else was injured. “We think about stuff like this and we know it could happen here, but you hope it never does,” he said. “It happened here. Now we’re here to pick up the pieces.”

A Day of Loss

This tragedy occurred on the same day that Houston police Sgt. Christopher Brewster was also murdered while responding to a domestic violence call. Deadly shootings overnight claimed the lives of two police officers.
