A man identified as a “person of interest” in the fatal shooting of an off-duty Pittsburgh police officer has surrendered to authorities. Christian Bey was already in custody on an unrelated parole violation when he became a focus of the investigation into the death of Officer Calvin Hall.
Officer Hall, 36, was shot and killed in the Homewood neighborhood early Sunday morning. Police responded to a call regarding a man, Douglas Watson Sr., 44, who was allegedly waving a gun. Watson was subsequently arrested.
According to reports, the arrest of Watson led to an argument between relatives of Officer Hall and friends of Watson. Officer Hall reportedly attempted to de-escalate the situation when he was shot multiple times in the back at close range, according to Pittsburgh’s KDKA-TV.
Christian Bey, who is now a central figure in the investigation, reportedly turned himself in Thursday evening on a parole violation, KDKA reported. He has a history of drug and firearms convictions and had recently completed a two-year sentence, according to the station. Bey is also reportedly a resident of the street where the shooting occurred.
