Man Arrested After Five-Year-Old Thrown from Third Floor at Mall of America

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – A 24-year-old suspect is in custody after a shocking incident at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. According to police reports, a five-year-old boy was thrown from the third floor of the mall on Friday, April 12, 2019.

Police responded swiftly to the scene at approximately 10 a.m. local time after receiving calls from witnesses reporting that a woman was screaming that her child had been thrown over a balcony. One witness told the New York Daily News that he saw the immediate aftermath of the incident and described the child as lying “motionless … in a pool of blood.” The quick response of first aid by officers and bystanders was crucial.

During a press conference held outside the mall, Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts stated that authorities had arrested a 24-year-old man believed to be responsible for throwing or pushing the boy. Chief Potts also indicated that the suspect did not appear to have any connection to the boy or his mother, making the incident appear to be a random act of violence. The suspect is now facing serious charges.

“Our officers initially responded and performed first aid on the child along with some other witnesses and passersby,” Potts said. “The child did suffer significant injuries.” The boy was immediately transported to Children’s Minnesota hospital in Minneapolis with his mother. As of the time of the report, his condition was unknown. The police are continuing their investigation.

This incident is a stark reminder of the potential for violence in public spaces and the importance of vigilance. The community is understandably shaken by this senseless act. The authorities are working diligently to understand the motive behind the attack and to ensure the safety of the public. The incident also highlights the importance of mental health awareness and resources.
